Merrill Lynch has created new portfolio options which are aimed at making impact investing, that is investing which is intended to make a difference in societal, political, and environmental trends, available to diverse investors from different generations and levels of wealth. Environmental and social governance (EGS) investments have increased over the last several years.
While they make up a small proportion of total investments, brokerage firms see great potential in this market and are putting resources towards its further development. Individuals and companies are increasingly looking for ways to use their money to publicly demonstrate the issues that they care about and EGS investments provide an avenue for this impulse. For example, shareholders can have additional indicators about the values of the company they support.
