Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Zaragoza, Valladolid, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and other Spanish cities are aiming to become "climate neutral" by 2030, the Guardian reports.
That's a goal the European Commission has set for 112 European cities, according to Phys.org.
"It requires innovative ways of thinking and collaborating that engages all stakeholders, including citizens, and reshapes financial structures," says Maria Garcia Rodriguez, Strategic Pathfinder at EIT Climate-KIC in Spain, one of the groups behind the Collaboration Platform for Climate Neutrality of Spanish Cities.
The seven Spanish cities have been selected by the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge to lead the challenge.
"This work will have a positive impact on society and guide the political decisions that will benefit the population the most," says Child Patrick, the manager of the European Mission for 100 Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities by 2030, in a press release.
According to Phys.org, many Spanish cities are already "climate neutrality" or working to be by 2030, but the new platform will help them work more closely with each other and with the private and government sectors to make their goals a reality.
